Former Gophers football player Casey O'Brien tackles cancer

Recent college graduate and former Gophers football player Casey O'Brien learns he has cancer again.

After he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer back in 2017. Now, he's sharing his story in hopes of inspiring others.

It was 2017 when Casey O'Brien was first diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called synovial sarcoma. He was just 19 years old and a sophomore at the University of Minnesota. The then-football player underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his leg and then six months of chemotherapy. Casey was considered cancer-free and finished his football career and graduated from the U of M in May of 2021.

Unfortunately, Casey's cancer has returned. He announced on social media that he learned in late August that he had a small tumor on his spine. He had surgery to remove the tumor on Sept. 13.

Casey is now receiving radiation therapy five days a week for six weeks. He is also taking a break from his job as a financial adviser.

Despite his diagnosis, Casey is staying positive. He is using his platform to share his story and raise awareness about synovial sarcoma. He is also raising money for cancer research.

Casey's story is an inspiration to many. He is a reminder that cancer can strike anyone, at any age. He is also a reminder that it is possible to face cancer with courage and determination.
