Avalanche in Swiss Alps Kills Three, Including American Teenager

Three people, including an American teenager from the United States, were killed in an avalanche near the Swiss resort town of Zermatt on Tuesday, police said.

Authorities reported that the avalanche occurred at Riffelberg, near the popular ski resort. The victims were part of a group of skiers who were caught in the avalanche. The injured person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The American teenager was identified as a 15-year-old boy from California. The other two victims were a 48-year-old Swiss man and a 52-year-old German woman.

The avalanche occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time (5:30 a.m. EST). Police said the avalanche was triggered by a group of skiers who were skiing off-piste, or outside of designated ski areas.

The avalanche was the second deadly avalanche in Switzerland in recent weeks. On March 19, four people were killed in an avalanche in the southeastern Swiss canton of Graubünden.
