The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. The team was founded in 1946 as one of the original eight teams of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the NBA.

The Celtics have won a record 17 NBA championships, the most of any team in the league. They have also won 21 Eastern Conference championships and 11 Atlantic Division championships. The Celtics are one of the most successful teams in American professional sports history.

The Celtics' home arena is the TD Garden, which they share with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Celtics have a long and storied history, and their fans are some of the most passionate in the NBA.
