Miami, FL - December 19, 2023 - Inter Miami CF's arduous preseason taxing came to a close on Thursday when Lionel Messi took the field against his boyhood club Newells Old Boys. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, marked the final preseason fixture for the Herons before the 2024 MLS season begins.
Messi, who joined Inter Miami in 2023, played the full 90 minutes and was a constant threat to the Newells defense. The Argentine superstar had several chances to score, but he was unable to find the back of the net. Newells took the lead in the 25th minute through a goal from Juan Garro, but Inter Miami equalized in the 55th minute through a goal from Gonzalo Higuain. The match ended with both teams sharing the spoils.
